This is interesting. This set is made of a composite material, somewhat like particle board. The stocks are brass lined. Several sets have turned up in the Chicago area, however to date I haven’t been able to find the name of the maker. You can see the top layer wearing thin or chipping off. Also the tuning pin just snapped in two. It appears as if the maker also made a chanter of the same material. Actually this reveals considerable thought and innovation. Mounts appear to be made of Ivoroid (celluloid) and catalin. Unfortunately I’ve lost the name of the piper holding this set.
Update July 2022 – I received a copy of a newspaper article from The Chicago Tribune, November 1928, regarding Robert Morrison, Chief Engineer. He was identified in the article as “the only manufacturer of bagpipes in North America” and “the only maker of bakelite bagpipes in the world.” He had a son, George, who was also a piper, who attended Northwestern Military Academy in 1926. (see picture below)
There may be absolutely no connection between Robert Morrison and Unknown #11 however my spider senses say otherwise. If anyone has information in either direction, please contact me.
