You may encounter a bagpipe similar to the picture at the left with a chanter stamped “McLeod – Forfar” and wonder who this was. In 1972 Pipe Major Iain McLeod of the World Champion Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band bought into the Gillanders bagpipe business. The firm became Gillanders and McLeod. During this time, McLeod designed a chanter that was stamped “McLeod – Forfar”. If the chanter is original to the bagpipe, you have a Gillanders bagpipe, which will probably be quite good.
You may also encounter bagpipes or chanters stamped “MacLeod” which would reference “MacLeod Highland Supplies”, a company still in operation but having no relationship to “McLeod Forfar”.
