The firm was founded by Ruthven Milne, a native of New South Wales where he had previously founded a kilt-making business called Highland Crafts. In the 1970s he and his family moved to Scotland where he formed Piob Mohr. They were suppliers of all things Scottish, including a line of bagpipes. Sons-in-law Paul (Tony) Blackburn and Ian McGregor were principle turners. Ruthven was said to be a Master Turner, however his involvement in the bagpipe shop was limited. In 1986 Michael Phee joined the firm as a turner. He left in 2008 to form his own bagpipe business in Australia.
Ruthven died in 2018. Piob Mohr continues today however bagpipe manufacturing has ceased.
